Do Process! May 2024
Process Service PA llc Recognizes Law Day!
For many Americans, May 1st is just another day, but in the legal community, we celebrate it as Law Day. This national holiday has a rich history, annual themes, and a shared dedication to honoring the justice system in our country and the respectable individuals who work in it.
What is Law Day?
Law Day is observed annually on May 1st to honor the rule of law in a free society. The concept was formed in 1957 by American Bar Association president Charles S. Rhyne and introduced nationally by President Eisenhower in 1958. The official date was declared by Congress in 1961, and since then, it has spread around the world and become recognized as a month-long recognition among the legal community.
Programs for Law Day are organized by bar groups, courts, colleges, organizations, and businesses. The American Bar Association (ABA) establishes an annual theme that directs the year’s discussions and activities. The theme is meant to spotlight a specific aspect of legal processes and justice work that impacts the daily lives of Americans. Past themes include 2019: Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society and 2021: Advancing the Rule of Law Now (This was particularly in response to the role of COVID-19 on the legal atmosphere) Additionally, The President issues a proclamation recognizing the importance of the rule of law; a tradition that started with Eisenhower in 1958. Youth and adults alike can participate in Law Day programs to hopefully learn more about our country’s justice system and commend our legal professionals.
What Will Law Day Look Like This year?
The 2024 Law Day theme is, “Voices of Democracy,” to acknowledge our country’s 60th presidential election in 2024 and emphasize the power of political literacy. The ABA has published its virtual programs, including a kickoff conversation between the American Bar Association president Mary Smith and the Law Librarian of Congress Aslihan Bulut regarding their interpretations of this year’s theme. Now that in-person events are returning, it is common to see free museum tours, classroom visits from judges and attorneys, and networking events among local firms and bar groups. At the very least, firms may want to celebrate with a simple luncheon to applaud their legal teams from interns to senior executives.
