Struggling with ElderCare
Why are we struggling with elder care? Believe it or not this is a relatively new concept and way of life for our generation. Years ago, it was normal for three generations to be living under one roof. My husband and brother-in-law grew up this way; grandparents living with them.
So why does it seem that our parents are not well prepared for their golden years? We grew up believing that there will be a retirement plan and funding for the care of our parents. But this is not the case thanks to the 2007-2008 market crash and a poor economy over the past ten years. This crash left so many people with significant losses to their retirement savings. Many seniors are remaining in the workforce longer. But what happens when the health situation of our parents change? Who is going to step up and take care of them? We are, the adult children of aging parents. So our society is finding itself unchartered territory. We are torn between caring for its elderly and trying to live our own lives.
Another issue is the confusion caused by The Elder Care industry. It has made certain assumptions that there is a need for Senior Care Facilities; which is why so many of them are popping up. Here is the problem. The industry assumed the senior demographic is attracted to and could afford to live in resort-like retirement communities. Just because “you build it they will come”. Not true. Our parents cannot afford them. Instead there is a new trend called “Aging In Place”; that no one saw coming.
Therefore the dawn of the Care Manager. We are daughters, nieces, sons who have we have found ourselves in the role of managing the care of an elderly loved one while trying to maintain our own lives and careers. We are just not prepared for any of this. But now there is AgingParentsManagement.com.
